Dr Simpson's Class have decided to work in the following groups
Plants: Mia Grunden, Jonah Siverson, Breezy Maginness and Sammy Clearihan It's all about diversity, abundance and distribution. What plants, where? Pest versus native versus indigenous. Lots of quadrats along transects.
Animals: Jess Baxter and Alex Suttie It's all about diversity, abundance and distribution. What animals, where? Pest versus native versus indigenous. Lots of trapping - pitfall traps with low fences in the heathland, pitfall traps with tiles in the reserve, tiles flat on the ground in the reserve, traps in the water way. Insects - land and aquatic amphibians Birds Reptiles Mammals
Soils: Michael Levy and Stephen Warne Soil samples and lab testing - lots of it! To establish if the soil changes where the vegetations does - what influence does the soil have on the location of plant species and therefore the animal species.
Climate and Water: Tomas McKenzie, Rachel Sherrington, Kyle Arnott and Tash James What is the general climate for the area - Bureau of Meterology should help with this, but what are the local micro-climates like? How can we measure this? Does it determine habitat types? What to do with the water movement through and over the soil? What can you tell us about water quality?
Humans: Em Hodge, Jess Evans and Winsome Thorne Turner How do humans influence the environment? How is their impact distributed across the school? What sort of impacts do they have? You need to think about management actions that will influence our management of the natural environment for the safety of the humans that use it, but also you need to think about management actions to manage the damage done by humans to the environment.
